During
the 2003 World Series of Poker, he said that all great poker players have their
own style: aggressive, loose, or tight. He takes one hand at a time because
winning is EVERYTHING. Nguyen once stated that he has a very high win rate once
he arrives at the final table. He said that he has been there so many times that
he knows what he has to do. That is exactly the reason why he has so many titles
under his belt including the main event at the World Series of Poker in 1998.
The final hand in that event will be remembered for a long time to come because
of Scotty telling his opponent, Kevin McBride, "You call this one and it's
all over, baby." He called and it was over. McBride had called thinking
that playing the full house on the board was going to get him half the pot, but
Scotty had a nine in his hand giving him a larger full house. He earned
the title and a million dollars.
Scotty is one of the best and most well-rounded poker players around. He is also
among the highest earning tournament players of all time. With all that being
said, it is his personal style that I like. His laugh, charming personality, and
the way that he finishes every sentence with the word "baby" is the
icing on the cake on why I had to include him on my top ten tournament poker
players list.
One quality that I find in common in many of the poker players that I admire is
confidence. Scotty Nguyen definitely exudes confidence. During the World Poker
Tour event at the Bellagio,
he stated, "I play to win, not lose. Scotty Nguyen gonna win it tomorrow,
baby." He did not win the event, but I think that is a key reason why he
has such a high win rate. He believes that he is going to win, therefore he
does.
Scotty's titles include Pot Limit Omaha at the 2001 World Series of Poker, Omaha
High Low at the 1997 World Series, two World Poker Open titles at Foxwoods
(including one championship event worth $300,000), Limit Hold'em and Seven Card
Stud at the 2003 Legends of Poker, and Omaha HiLo and seven card stud at the
2003 Festa al Lago. Some of his 2003 final table appearances include second in
No Limit Hold'em at the Legends of Poker and the Grand Slam of Poker, second in
Omaha High at Bellagio's Five-Star World Poker Classic, third in Omaha High at
the Four Queens, second in Omaha High at the World Poker Open, first place in
H.O.S.E at Foxwoods World Poker Finals, and first place in Pot Limit Omaha at
the Bellagio Five Diamond.
