My Rounders Review:
I first saw the movie "Rounders" after I had been playing Texas Hold'Em for about a year, I noticed People were throwing out movie quotes from Teddy KGB, the Russian character played by John Malkovich. Quote Example; "Biiig Daddy" I could tell the movie was creating a huge increase of new players to our regular game. Years later you can play Texas Hold'Em at nearly every casino & online poker room.
Matt Damon plays the main character, "Mike McDermott" & Edward Norton plays his best friend "Lester 'Worm' Murphy" who's just released from a prison term that Mike himself might have also had to serve, "If Lester would have given him up!" Feeling obligated for the huge sacrifice his friend made, Mike tries everything he can to keep Worm out of trouble while attempting to hold together a failing relationship with his girlfriend while juggling law school. Mike can't resist the draw of poker and ends up back in the trenches of the Rounders again realizing that life is a grind without his true love of poker.
Matt portrays the main character Mike McDermott brilliantly and Ed Norton was very convincing as Worm, John Malkovich invents his own unique version of a Russian accent while pulling off the role of Teddy KGB "A Truly Unforgettable Performance!"
There is also a cameo in Rounders by the 2 time World Series of Poker Champion Johnny Chan.
Rounders portrays the life of a professional gambler more realistically than I've ever seen before. From hiding large amounts of cash all over his apartment, to the dark smoke filled poker rooms hidden away in basements, to ring games at the Taj Mahal Casino. From amassing small fortunes and getting broke again then back in the same day. The life of a poker player is one of extremes, danger and euphoria. People get drawn into it and like a drug become addicted, a small handful end up conquering poker and carving out a wealthy lifestyle for themselves.
I truly believe this movie can be attributed to the start of a 'new revolution' of poker players, TV shows like the "World Poker Tour" & "Poker Millions" sprang up out of nowhere. Attendance at the World Series of Poker has increased by leaps & bounds to record numbers every year. "Although poker was an already growing sport!"
There is no doubt in my mind, Rounders has been the catalyst to growth and has pulled people into poker like never before!
I Give The film Rounders "Two Thumbs Way Up!" And a "Hell Yah!"
